A Scotsman could face three years in a Dubai jail. He’s charged with public indecency for putting his hand on a man in a bar.
The “cultural misunderstanding” has left Jamie Harron stuck in Dubai for three months. He’s facing jail time, he’s jobless, and he’s deep in debt. Jamie, who’s from Stirling, has spent over £30,000 on expenses and legal fees. That includes all of his £20,000 in savings, plus another £12,000 on a credit card.
The electrician was in Dubai on a two-day stopover on his way back to work in Afghanistan.
Authorities have held the 27-year-old in the UAE since July 15 on two charges: drinking alcohol and public indecency. Jamie has since lost his job, since he hasn’t been able to fly home — authorities took away his passport.
A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman said:
‘We have been in contact with a British man following his arrest in Dubai in July. We are providing consular assistance.’
